Cleansing Crystals and Charging Crystals ~ There is a BIG Difference!

Hello There

I have seen the question come up time and time again in forums, during workshops and from countless clients over the years…..

‘How do I cleanse a crystal?’ followed closely by ‘How do I charge a crystal?’

There is a huge difference between the two and there is only ONE proven method that will actually cleanse AND charge a crystal. There are however plenty of other, different methods for cleansing and charging. What complicates things is some methods will not work for crystals that vibrate at a very high frequency, some methods won’t work for crystals that are porous, containing metals or water and other methods won’t work for crystals that are too soft!

To keep things really simple, the method that is proven to both CLEANSE AND CHARGE ANY crystal is:

See the lists below for other proven and unproven methods as there are many.

In layman’s terms, a crystal is like a battery. It vibrates at a certain frequency and emits a lovely energy. When we use that crystal, it will often discharge it’s positive energy into our body. This is why people may feel a tingle or strange feeling in their hand/arm/body when they first pick a crystal up or wear one for long periods of time. The energy of our body is merging with that of the crystal, which can feel quite odd at first.

Crystals can also absorb negative energy, which turns their positive energy to negative after awhile. Some crystals can deflect or push away negativity, but that still requires using their energy in order to facilitate a protective shield. However we choose to use a crystal, it will eventually run out of energy and need to be recharged, just like a battery.

So our crystal has been used and has run out of energy. Not only has it run out of energy, but it may also have absorbed negative energy. Therefore, we need to cleanse the crystal and then recharge it. When we talk about ‘cleansing’ a crystal, it means energetically.

If you want to physically clean a crystal, just wash it under running water or use a soft, dry cloth or soft toothbrush. Unless the crystal is under 4 on the Mohs hardness scale (ie. its really soft), it’ll be fine under a tap. If in doubt, please Click Here to see the Mohs Hardness scale.

When first starting to use crystals, I always recommend the PROVEN methods of cleansing and charging first. There are tons of ancient methods that came about due to our indigenous culture’s beliefs in god, the spirit world and the power of the planets in our solar system. However, when starting out, always use the proven methods first.

A proven method gives an excellent base from which to work….our logical mind can understand science and if we know a proven result is going to happen, we can keep experimenting until we get that result. If we aren’t sure, then how will we know whether something has actually worked or not? When you take a crystal that has run out of or absorbed negative energy and you cleanse & charge it with sunlight, you should be able to see or feel a difference immediately. It may feel fizzy, it may make you smile when you pick it up or it could simply look sparkly and ‘happy’…..I’ve lost count of the lovely folk who’ve commented that my crystals are extremely happy ~ that is because I physically clean them, then cleanse and charge them in lovely sunshine, then reiki them for the highest good 🙂

So start with proven methods, then experiment with the unproven methods…after all, we are all unique individuals and will each have our own way of working with crystals. Part of the delight of working with these spiritual tools is the fun we can have in playing with them 🙂

And please learn the difference between cleansing and charging as it is very important. Don’t think because something cleanses it has the ability to charge as well…..smudging is a perfect example. Sure, smoke can bind negative energy and dispel it, but it cannot energise things ~ it is fantastic for cleansing/clearing, but will NOT charge a crystal.  Sound is also excellent for clearing negative energy, the sound wave literally whacks the negative frequencies right out of the crystal. However, for it to add a frequency to a crystal, the sound wave must be of a higher frequency than that of a crystal. Sound is great if we’re wanting to cleanse and charge a piece of Lapis, Onyx or Obsidian perhaps, but it probably won’t work if we’re trying to charge a Brandberg, Selenite or Apophyllite. The tables below clearly show the different methods of cleansing and charging and also whether they are proven or not.

There are also some myths I’d like to dispel. Lots of people give warnings about leaving crystals in direct sunlight for too long and on some levels, they’re right. Half an hour is more than enough if you’re not sure whether a crystal can be left in sunlight or not. Half an hour will NOT damage any crystal and believe me, I’ve experimented with this very issue with 1000s of crystals over the past 25 years. If you live in an extremely hot country with strong sunlight, put crystals out early in the morning or late afternoon when the beams from the sun are weaker, to ensure they don’t crack or explode in the intense heat. Crystals will charge on a cloudy day too as sunlight is super strong ~ if we have light outside, a crystal will cleanse/charge.

As a general rule, many purple or pink crystals will fade in sunlight due to their chemical content breaking down in sunlight. Be wary of leaving Amethyst or Kunzite in the sun for too long. Fluorite is the only crystal on the planet to have TWO internal lattice structures (every other crystal has one). Sunlight breaks down one of those structures, causing Fluorite to shatter easily. It is fine in the sunshine for half an hour, after that, pop it into a shaded area. I have had Amethyst that has faded in sunlight and pieces that sit in sunlight every day and haven’t faded one bit. I have no idea why and can only assume its due to the concentration of chemicals in the crystal…some pieces have more than others. I also had a LOT of Fluorite smash over the years before a mineralogist taught me about lattice structures!

Natural sunlight is the only proven method of both energetically cleansing and recharging a crystal, which is handy as its also the cheapest and easiest method to use. Not everyone is aware of or proficient in Reiki, which is the other method I believe cleanses and charges, but it’s unproven so we’ll stick with fact for now. I pop all of my crystals on the windowsill when I do the housework ~ not every week, sometimes every two weeks or once a month. Simply wait for a nice day, pop everything onto your windowsills, go about the housework (or whatever you do that will only last 30-60 minutes) and then remove any crystals from the windowsill that you might be concerned about. Ask Google if you aren’t sure. Most solid crystals such as Lapis, Malachite, Hematite, Iron Pyrite etc could be left in the sunlight for life and never fade. Clear Quartz is fine to be left in the sun forever too! I automatically cleanse and recharge any crystal I’ve used for a few days.

Moonlight is a huge bug bear for me because it is not a proven method of charging a crystal. Now I know science cannot explain everything, but on this one, I have to side with logic. To energetically cleanse a crystal, we need to remove or break down it’s negative energy and as the moon’s energy is magnetic, it cannot do it. If we want to look at Moonlight itself, then it simply isn’t powerful enough. We get 0.2 lux illumination in a direct beam of moonlight. We get 120,000 lux illumination from a beam of sunlight. There is no comparison.

However!! Before half the moon goddesses reading this send scorching thoughts my way, you MUST go with what feels right to you. Just because science cannot prove something doesn’t mean to say it isn’t so (anyone, like myself, who works with Spirit knows the truth in this!!). I have tried and tried to cleanse/charge crystals in moonlight and for me it has never worked. If it works for you however, then that is part of your belief system and must be honoured. What I will say is I always set my grids to the lunar calendar. I love the moon and have followed it’s cycles for many years. The symbolic meaning of the moon makes up a big part of my energy reports and I feel the magnetic pull of it can and does effect human beings and our planet as a whole.

Another myth I’d like to dispel is that certain crystals do not need to be cleansed and charged. Experience has taught me this simply isn’t true.  Information was released decades ago in a certain book that Natural Citrine & Blue Kyanite never need to be cleansed or charged. I can understand the logic behind this given their chemical composition, but having worked with them both extensively over the decades, depending on what they are used for, they must be cleansed and charged. Think about it logically.  No battery is a self supplying source of energy or the energy giants would be digging it out’ve the ground by the bucketload….it really is that simple.  I didn’t cleanse or charge my Kyanite wand after using it during a particularly sticky healing session with a client….and that energy was taken straight into my next session, which caused quite a negative energetic reaction! We live and learn 😉

It’s also a myth that Selenite and Black Tourmaline don’t need to be cleansed or charged ~ OF COURSE they need to be cleansed and charged. They are no different to any other crystal. Selenite may have a lovely, high vibration, but its not THAT high….it can absorb negative energy like any other crystal. Someone wrote a blog on this a few years’s ago and I could bop him as it’s just his belief and an ego trip that simply isn’t factual. The rumour mill got hold of it, chinese whispers ensued and hey presto, all of a sudden this big misnomer has suddenly become fact!! Nooooooooo!!

It’s particularly damaging given many of us use large pieces of Selenite to charge our smaller crystals. If you have any doubts, think about this logically…..once the smaller crystals have absorbed the energy of the bigger Selenite, where is that Selenite going to get more energy from??? And what if a smaller crystal discharges it’s negative energy into the Selenite before sucking up some charge?

The same goes for Black Tourmaline. It is THE stone recommended to deflect negative energy and protect us, so to not cleanse or charge it makes no sense. Don’t leave Selenite in water either……another lesson learned the hard way, it simply dissolves if you leave it in a bowl for a few hours. Ooops 😉  Washing larger (such as towers, slabs or lights) or thick pieces of Selenite under running water will do no harm if they are dried naturally in the sun afterwards or with a cloth. It appears it’s leaving Selenite in water rather than washing it under water that causes damage.

I’ve detailed below in simple tables the most commonly used methods for cleansing and charging. Some are proven, some are not and there are probably a few more unproven methods that haven’t been mentioned too. Start with the proven, gauge how crystals feel before and after cleansing and again, before and after charging….then go for it with the unproven methods.

Walking a sparkly, crystal path is all about playfulness, about adventure and experimentation. What works for one may not work for another, so forge your own path and do so with joy!

With much love, Krissy XXX

SunlightPlace crystals in sunlight for no more than half an hour. Sunlight breaks down negative energy. No crystal will fade or be damaged from only half an hour in the sun.Proven
SoundUse a singing bowl or chimes/bells/tuning fork and strike it directly next to a crystal. Be aware that the sound emitted must be of a higher frequency than the crystal you are trying to cleanse. Proven
Salt WaterPlace crystals in a bowl of salt water for a few hours. The salt water will absorb any negative energy. Natural sea salt or Himalyan salt is preferable to white, processed salt. Remove crystals, wash them off in clean, fresh water and dry them. Do not use salt with porous, water based or metal based crystals (ie. opal, lapis lazuli, malachite, hematite etc.) If in doubt, do not use salt. Proven
Dry SaltPlace crystals in a bowl of dry sea salt for a few hours. Bury the crystals deep in the salt. The salt will absorb any negative energy. Discard salt afterwards. Do not use salt with porous, water based or metal based crystals (ie. opal, lapis lazuli, malachite, hematite etc.) If in doubt, do not use salt.Proven
WaterWash crystals under running water, preferably the fresh water of a stream, river or waterfall, but under a tap is just fine too. This method will not necessarily clean a crystal energetically & remove the negative energy, but it will physically clean a crystal. A soft toothbrush can be used to clean a cluster. Do not use water on crystals softer than 4 on the hardness scale. Crystals such as Selenite will dissolve in water. If in doubt, do not use water. Proven
ReikiReiki energy is strong as it is universal energy channelled with intent. Firstly, place your hand above the crystal, activate your energy and say 'cleanse'. Wait until the energy lessens a little and then ask it to 'charge'. Wait until the energy lessens again and know that the crystal is now cleansed & charged. Unfortunately, this method cannot be proved, but I have found it works quite well. Unproven
SmudgingLight sage, Cedarwood, Paolo Santo, Sweetgrass or Sandalwood and waft the smoke over and around the crystal, passing the crystal through the smoke several times. Ask in your mind that the crystal be cleansed and know that it is so. Unproven
EarthBurying a crystal in the earth for a few days or weeks will ensure all of the negative energy drain out of the crystal and into the earth. See above information regarding salt & water (which is present in a lot of earth).Unproven

SunlightPlace crystals in sunlight for no more than half an hour. Sunlight breaks down negative energy. No crystal will fade or be damaged from only half an hour in the sun. This method can be used to both cleanse AND charge a crystal. It is the easiest & most cost effective method to use. Just pop your crystals on a windowsill or outside if you prefer.Proven
Crystal ClusterLarge clusters of crystals can be cleansed, charged and then programmed with the intent to 'energise'. If we then place smaller crystals (of a lower vibration) such as tumble stones or pieces of jewellery on to the cluster, the smaller pieces will absorb the energy of the larger piece and will become charged. The larger cluster must be cleansed and recharged after each use. Amethyst, Clear Quartz, Kyanite & Selenite are all excellent energisers.Proven
ReikiReiki energy will charge up a cleansed crystal. Place the crystal on a table, hold your hand over the top of it and send reiki into the crystal with the intent that the energy will Charge. The crystal be filled with universal energy. I charge all of my crystals in sunlight AND then reiki them too for good measure 🙂Unproven
MoonlightPlace your crystals under the light of a full moon and they will be charged. Please be aware that the moon's effect on the earth is magnetic. The light from the moon is so weak, it cannot charge up a crystal. However, many people strongly believe that it does, even though there is no evidence of such.Unproven
Running WaterWash crystals under running water, preferably the fresh water of a stream, river or waterfall, but under a tap is fine too. This method will not necessarily clean a crystal energetically & remove the negative energy, but it will physically clean a crystal. If the crystal is of a lower vibration, then running water may both cleanse and charge it. Unproven
EarthBurying a crystal in the earth for a few days or weeks will ensure all of the negative energy is drained out of the crystal and into the earth. The earth is then said to recharge the crystal.Unproven

  3. I have a question.
If you have time to answer it, it would be awesome!

I just got my first crystal: Celestial Aura Quartz | AKA: Tanzine Aura Quartz.

Your blog article on the subject of cleaning/charging crystals listed that:
“As a general rule, many purple or pink crystals will fade in sunlight due to their chemical content breaking down in sunlight.”
Celestial quartz has blue and purple… as a coating.
It’s also composed of clear quartz, which “…is fine to be left in the sun forever too!”

Also that: “… half an hour {in the sun} will not damage any crystal…”

Because this clear quartz has a purple/blue coating, should I be safe and only leave it in
the sun for :30 min, or will longer be ok since it’s base is comprised of clear quartz?

Thanks for any time and consideration in the matter!

    Much respect,

    1. Hi Joanie

That’s a great question!! Aura Quartz should not fade in the sun as the process to bond the precious metals to the quartz is permanent and doesn’t involve dye.

The only time I’ve known them to fade is when they haven’t been high quality aura quartz (usually from India), where the company will have gone cheap instead of buying the expensive vacuum metalising equipment. A low quality aura qartz may fade and the coating may also peel off.

If you would like to send me a picture, I can confirm yours is the high quality and it can sit in the sun all day long 🙂

Bright blessings and have a wonderful day

      1. Awesome!!! Thanks soOO much! I would love that! I’ll take a picture of it in sunlight. Do you have any particulars you would need for it to be best displayed in the photo? -Thanks again!

        1. Best pics are when a crystal is popped on a white background (piece of paper would do) and photographed in natural sunlight. Artificial light can really throw off the colour or hue of many crystals. 🙂

          1. Great! That’s how I’ll photograph it. I have an opportunity to do it this Sat. Then I’ll e-mail it to you. Thanks again for all your help! I really appreciate it!! ツ

            – Joanie

          2. OK! I have sent images to your ‘serendipidy’ e-mail I found on this website. I hope that’s ok. Thanks again!!! I’m excited to hear what you have to say. Let me know what you think. All the best, -Joanie

  9. I have had crystals damaged in sunlight in less than 30minutes-that wasn’t because of the sunlight though, it was because of the heat. Just mentioning it so people can keep it in mind when placing their crystals in sunlight. It was over 90 degrees that day my crystals broke, but I was a novice and didn’t know better.

    1. Yes, there is some wisdom and common sense in using crystals (no offence)…..LOL I live in the UK where the average temperatures and heat from the sun aren’t going to damage anything….LOL… when I lived in the Middle East, nothing would be put out in the sun in the heat of the day as it would literally fry eggs on car bonnets! With age, comes wisdom and we all learn 🙂 If a crystal has a fracture in it or is quartz, it may shatter in that sort of intense heat or if left in the sun, may focus the beam of sunlight onto something else so it burns. Natural sunlight is great, but if you live in a crazy hot country, be smart and pop crystals in sunlight for half an hour early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is weaker. Have a great day 🙂

    1. Hi Yohan

Thank you for the lovely feedback 🙂 Yes, those Synergy Crystals definitely need cleansing and charging, although it is fairly hard to charge Moldavite. It seems to prefer meteor showers or sound to any other form of charging. I cleanse and charge all crystals. They are tools and if we take care of our tools, keep them clean, shiny, happy and ready to use, then they take care of us 🙂

Have a lovely day, bright blessings

    1. I do not believe they can unless it is made of charged copper or quartz. The shape of something itself is not enough to charge a crystal in any way am aware of. Hope that helps and have a lovely day 🙂

  10. You’re saying sunlight breaks down negative ions. But doesn’t sunlight create negative ions? To me what you’re saying seems backwards. It’s the negative ions that are positive. There are too many positive ions (moon) in the atmosphere, and they get breathed through the lungs into the blood platelets, which creates serotonin and affects the mood. Too much serotonin creates depression. I know the internet claims different, but intuition makes much more sense, and this is what intuition tells me. Can you help me understand? thanks 🙂

    1. Hi Jessica

Thank you for your comment 🙂 I have rephrased the blog slightly to read energy instead of ions. I do not claim to be a scientist and simply write blogs in a way I feel people can understand ~ am trying to make a very complicated subject easy for the layman to process. If you want exact science, by all means there are lots of amazing, technical sites out there that can provide that. There is no proof of what you say regarding the moon, but if that is what resonates as truth for you, then that is all that matters. Follow your own intuition and heart as it will guide you better than anyone else ever can 🙂 Have a wonderful day, bright blessings, Krissy.

      1. Hi Kristy, love your blog! From a scientific point, negative ions are actually good for you. It sounds backwards because of the word “negative”. But negative ions gives us fresh air, seratonin in our bodies. It’s just chemistry and it can get tricky. I can send you extra info if you like 🙂
        Sincerely Linda

  11. HI,

What do you mean when you say ” The same goes for Black Tourmaline. It is THE stone recommended to deflect/absorb negativity. Don’t cleanse/charge it at your peril!! ”

My understanding was that I needs to be charged? Yes?

    1. Hi Anna

I will change the wording on the blog as ~ do not cleanse or charge it at your peril ~ means, if you do not cleanse or charge it, then it will not work well.

Hope that clarifies and yes, ALL crystals need to be cleansed and charged. If there were any crystal that had an endless supply of energy after we used it, we would be using it as some form of fossil fuel by now 🙂 Many thanks and have a lovely day.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Scientifically proven Luciana. Please refer to Google, there are tons of articles out there 🙂 Thanks and have a lovely day.

Your thoughts on contacting the higher realms with Moldavite-other high vibration crystals thanks..

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Joseph

Please read the following blogs on Moldavite and How to Mediate with Crystals. They should be a good starting point:

Meditation is the best way ~ there are many different forms of meditation. Experiment until you find the one that works with you and then practice it daily whilst holding a crystal in your palm or on a chakra point if lying down. We all have the ability to contact the higher realms ~ some find it easy, some don’t, but it’s regular practice, no matter who we are, that creates a strong connection and intuitive guidance we can learn to trust.

If you haven’t had a lot of experience with crystals, start with something like Clear Quartz or Selenite and see how that feels. If you need a bit more ‘oomph’, Moldavite, Amphibole, Lodolite and Phenacite are the ones that work quickly for me.
      Thanks and bright blessings

  13. i have a theory that a cleansed Crystal could recharge with the Human Body with body heat , am i wrong !

    1. Kristy Hodges

Can understand the logic behind the theory, but practice has shown that crystals don’t recharge with our body heat. Our auric field is made up of the heat, water and energy given off by our bodies, so crystals work brilliantly with our aura ~ hence people often feeling pulses, tingling, heat, cold or vibrations from them. This is the reaction between the crystal and our auric field being felt on some level.

We can use Reiki to recharge crystals however 🙂

  14. Excuse me but I have a couple of crystals that I pretty much cant find ANYWHERE if theyre okay to leave in the sun or not

    Green jade
    Red jasper
Turquoise (I saw one site say itll fade in light but idk)
    Smoky quartz
    Mahogany obsidian

    For my boyfriend he has
    Black obsidian
    Tigers eye

It would be very appreciated to know if these are okay to put in sunlight or not Thank you so much!

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Thanks for the query 🙂

Jade, Jasper, Pearls, Mahogany Obsidian, Black Obsidian and Tiger’s Eye are all absolutely fine to be left in the sun 24/7. They will not fade.

Sapphire, Ruby, Smoky Quartz & Turquoise may or may not fade depending on the quality and grade of the stone. For example, high quality American or Mexican Turquoise which is bright blue, doesn’t fade, but the Asian Turquoise, which is more on the green end of the colour spectrum, can fade. It is simply the chemicals within the crystals that are providing the colour that can break down in sunlight.

Some of the stones I’ve said may fade are often heat treated or dyed ~ so to be on the safe side, it’s best to only pop them in direct sunlight for around 30 mins then put them in a shaded area thereafter. Many thanks and have a lovely day 🙂

  15. I think youre mistaken, ive never seen anyone on the internet say that you can charge crystals with selenite, only cleansing them

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi, I used a Google search ‘charging with Selenite’ and the first link that came up is a website claiming Selenite can charge crystals. I’d rather not put the link on there as it’s a site I really like, despite disagreeing with them on Selenite 🙂 As I found that immediately with the first link, there is most certainly information out there that refers to charging crystals with Selenite, please just Google 🙂

Each to their own, if you feel it works for you, by all means do so. I personally don’t think it works, but we should always follow our own gut instincts regardless of what anyone says on the internet 🙂 Hope that helps, have a lovely day.

      1. I’ve read a lot on the internet about how Selenite can indeed cleanse and charge crystals but every now and again you need to do the same for the Selenite .I have two large circular plates of Selenite and I keep all my every day most used crystals in the Selenite always unless I’m using them .The Selenite does help in that area I just sometimes forget that my Selenite needs some love and care as well!

  16. You know how people say a cats purring can help strengthen bones? Could this be something that charges stones?

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi, I cannot say whether a cat’s purr would charge stones, but it is a vibration so may well do ~ it’s not something I’ve ever tested. What did happen when my son was little is he had a terrible earache in the middle of the night and there was little we could do until the doctor’s opened the next morning. It was obviously very sore and my son was crying, so I laid him in bed to try and soothe him back to sleep. Our cat curled around his head, I think to comfort him and he fell back asleep. In the morning, his ear ache had gone!! Once we get an earache, they don’t usually just disappear, so I always wondered if the cat purred and the vibration eased the pain or inflammation in the same way crystals work 🙂

  17. Krish Mehta

Which is best method to cleanse and charge my howlite bracelet? Thanks in advance!

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Krish

Sunlight every time. Howlite loves it and is, in fact, a great stone to use if you’re affected by solar energy at all. If the Howlite is dyed, only put it in the sun for 10 minutes and then back in the shade or the dye will fade. For natural, white Howlite however, sunlight is perfect! Many thanks and have a great day 🙂

  18. Thank goodness for common sense!!! I have read all sorts of rubbish about charging crystals, including wrapping them in silk, and even under Christmas lights!!!!! How is that meant to work!?! And some of this has come from a very popular source. No wonder there is such confusion.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Thanks Nicola. I have to keep it simple or my brain would explode 😉 LOL
Yes, there is all sorts of rubbish out there that causes confusion, which is what prompted me to write this blog and make the information open and accessible to all.

  19. I’ve read on many sites that crystals can be cleansed if you put in in brown rice for numerous hours, is that true because I’ve been doing it mostly with my jewelry and I feel a difference is that a hoax or something that is valid? The rest of my stones and crystals I cleanse and charge in the sunlight, they seem to respond well to the sun and look so shiny and happy and if course if I’m using my free favorite crystals that I constantly hold onto I every now and again run the under the water just for a quick cleanse… Any advice on this?

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Samantha

I’ve also heard that crystals can be cleansed in rice. I prefer not to do that as rice has a powder that gets into the lining of jewellery bits and irritates me. I feel I have to wash/clean everything with water afterwards. Rice will soak up/cleanse away any negative energy, but it won’t charge crystals up. So crystal would need to be left in rice for a good few hours or preferably overnight, cleaned off/washed properly afterwards and then charged. I find it all a bit of a pain when it’s so easy to just pop a crystal on a windowsill in the sun, reiki it or to use a tuning fork or gong/sound wave 🙂 Always trust your own feelings as they will always be right for you. Some like the process or ritual of using rice and that’s great 🙂

There is a specific blog on Crystals & Water, using the search engine should bring that right up for you to answer any questions you may have regarding water/washing/cleansing etc.

Have a lovely day Samantha, thanks so much 🙂

      1. Thank you I realized that the brown rice only cleanses the stone that’s why I just used it for my jewelry pendants I don’t mind having to charge them in additions I charge and cleanse all my other stones and crystals in the sunlight… Thank you for your advice, happy blessings!

  20. I hv cleane my crystle clear quatz rose quards citrine amethyst stone jade stone aventurine crystal in dried salt nw im going to charge it wid the help of reiki kindly tel me can i charged them togather at a time wid master level and distance healing symbos

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Ibrahim, yes you can charge them all together at the same time, in person, with reiki. No need to use the distance healing symbols, although you can use the Cho Khu Rei ‘power’ symbol if you wish. Many thanks and bright blessings, Krissy 🙂

  21. Colleen Walker

Thank you for a fabulous article! This has answered so many questions I had (and some I now realise I should have had …)

I’m interested in what you say about using a (Tibetan singing?) bowl – can you guide this complete novice on how to choose/identify/select one with the best frequency?

    Many thanks!
    Love and light

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Colleen

Thanks so much for the positive feedback 🙂 I would speak to a sound specialist about a bowl ~ I have used them in the past, but prefer the sound of the pure quartz bowls rather than the Tibetan metal bowls. It’s just personal preference, metals are very ‘dense’ for me to work with so I much prefer the energy of quartz. I’d suggest visiting a music shop, holistic or Free Trade fair as that would be your best bet for frequency information & you’d get to try out different bowls before purchasing (highly recommended, these are not items to purchase online).

      Love and bright blessings

  22. I just have a brief question, I am a novice right now with my crystals. So, I have wrapped my green jade Crystal with macrame cord (netted), as a pendant, will the cord in anyway affect charging it?

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Tessa

Thanks for your questions. As long as there are gaps (ie as you say, netted), there will be no problem charging your Jade ~ it just needs to come into direct contact with sunlight for a little while, which most pendants and jewellery does anyway just from our wearing it 🙂 Hope that helps, have a lovely day!

  23. Hello Kristy, Thank you so much for this information. Reading it felt so right. Especially, keeping it simple. I recently purchased two Moldavite pendants and would like to know what’s the best way to cleanse and charge them. I don’t have any sound items like singing bowl or anything like that. Can you suggest if there is another simple way to do so. I’ve been putting them in the sunlight even before I read your blog. Would really appreciate any advice you can give me.
    Thank you again
    Many Blessings

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Mercy

Thank you for your lovely feedback.

Moldavite doesn’t need cleansing or charging ~ or, should I say, very little seems to have that affect on it. Moldavite vibrates at such a high frequency and not at a level of anything else on the planet, it seems to break all the rules! The only thing I have ever noticed that makes Moldavite more ‘buzzy’ is to pop it on the Earth in your garden (if you have one) during a meteor shower. That sometimes ‘charges them up’, but Moldavite does not retain any negative energy, nor does it’s vibrations ever seem to lessen or change. It’s an odd, but magical mineral to work with 🙂

If I do want to give it a boost, half an hour in sunlight will work fine 🙂 Many thanks and have a lovely day Mercy 🙂 Krissy x

  24. Hi this will be my first time ever buying and using a crystal I brought the black t one because I feel like I have a bad spell on me and a lot of bad energy so by my understanding I need to leave it in a bowl of sea salt for a couple hours then leave it in the sun for 30 min is there something I need to say while I’m cleaning and chargeing it please help I brought it Thursday and today is Saturday it’s still in the bag because I’m not sure what I need to do the lady at the store told me the place it over a white burning candle moveing it clock wise 7 times then it will be fine to wear please help as I’m lost again this is my first time

    1. Kristy Hodges

Oh Mary, bless you ~ there is such a lot of rubbish out there about crystals. Why do us humans have to complicate things?

As the blog says, crystals need to be put in sunlight for 30 minutes and they will be cleansed and charged. That’s it.

If you want to salt them, burn candles, chant or dance or whatever works for you, that is a personal choice, but none of it is necessary whatsoever and these people telling you these things need a better education on crystals! (sorry, it makes me so angry when people say such rubbish ~ if you were a practising pagan or witch, these things might apply, but as a non pagan/witch, they do not!).

So please take your crystal out of it’s bag, pop it on a windowsill and half an hour later you’re good to go. When you set it in the sun to cleanse and charge it, just say ‘I am placing you here in the sun to cleanse and charge’ and then when you pick it up to use it, ask the crystal to ‘protect me and work for my highest good’. You can speak out loud or in your own mind.

Simple, easy, magical 😉 Hope that helps Mary and that you feel better, bright blessings, Krissy x

  25. Thank you for the information, in the warmer seasons I put them in the sunlight but that is difficult for me considering I have hundreds of healing stones and crystals in raw for and tumbled. Since it’s winter and very cold it and we haven’t been getting much sunlight it’s always cloudy I’ve been using chimes and my 8″ singing bowl to clear them as I was told by someone that sounds pretty the crystal through a clearing process and then they recharge themselves plus I keep them in Selenite books all the time. Am I not doing enough? Because they seem to help heal myself and others that I’ve given my crystals and stones to….. It’s always raining and snowing right now so I can’t put them outside and I have so many so I can’t put them in windowsills. I am backing using my singing bowl which has a very high pitched sounds and then I do my chimes which are a lower sound so they are getting both at the same time. Is that benefiting my crystals at all????

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Samantha

As you can hopefully tell from the blog, sound is a perfectly acceptable way to keep a big collection of crystals cleansed. I tend to wash mine and set them in the sunlight during the summer, simply as it feels right to me and I like to keep my crystals clean and ready to go. Sunlight means on a cloudy day too. I don’t recommend direct rays of burning hot sun on any crystals! The sun is extremely powerful, it works just the same on a cloudy day, but I know what you mean about having tons and not being able to put them all on a windowsill!

To be fair, you’ll ‘know’ in your own mind and intuition if something needs to be moved or cleansed/charged ~ you’ll just get the urge to do so and it’ll keep niggling until you do. Otherwise, keep using sound like you’re doing and all will be well 🙂 Many thanks and bright blessings, Krissy x

  26. Hi, I am new to this. I have various crystals, such as amethyst, rose quartz, agate, and some others. I live in the UK too, in Cornwall. All we have had is rain, wind and grey clouds. Is there no other proven ways to charge them? I don’t have a singing bowl. Any advice please would be great ?.

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Joanna

The sun is really powerful, it’s rays pass easily through clouds, more than enough to charge crystals even on a cloudy day 🙂

      1. Thankyou so much for replying. Funny enough, the sun was shining brightly yesterday ?

  27. What a brilliant article. I do however have a question that I hope you can help me with. I live in the uk. Most of the time our weather is dull/cloudy with not much guaranteed sunlight. Please can you advise if just natural daylight is enough to charge crystals. I’m having a real hard time finding just one simple method to cleanse and charge my crystals in my chaotic busy life!!!!! Thanks for your help and much love ?

    1. Sorry I do apologise. I’ve just backtracked to a previous question and reply and realised you’ve been asked this before. Just a bit desperate at the moment and really want this to work for me. I guess my next question is to ask whether half an hour of daylight as opposed to sunlight is still enough for recharging?? Thanks again for your help ???

      1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Ayshe, no problem at all 🙂

It’s the UV rays that are important and they get through clouds no problem, so say an hour on a cloudy day during winter is fine. Try them on a cloudy day and try them on a really sunny day and see if you feel any difference. Most of mine that don’t fade in the sun are kept on windowsills so they’re always ready to go.

Others I’ll leave for a few hours on a cloudy day or 30 mins-ish on a really bright, sunny day. I don’t think theres any exactness to it, just go with what feels right to you and that will work perfectly 🙂 I’ll try to remember to update the blog to cover this question as it’s a good one!

Have a great day! Bright blessings, Krissy

  28. I have my disability hearing in Thursday the 15th can you suggest what crystals I should wear or carry with me to help me through the hearing and possibly getting approved? I’ve been waiting five years for this day and I want to go prepared just not sure what crystals are the best for my situation. I will definitely have amethyst I always carry our wear amethyst day and night. Any suggestions??

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Samantha

So sorry I didn’t see this earlier. My PC has crashed twice in the last six weeks, being taken away for a week at a time to be fixed so am only now catching up!

I would suggest Blue Kyanite and Lapis Lazuli. The impart strength, protection, calm, clear mindedness and allow you to speak your truth in a positive way. Good luck and hope everything goes well with the hearing. Love and bright blessings, Krissy

      1. Thanks for getting back to me even though I was finished with my hearing before I heard back from you so I decided why not take one of all the crystals I have, carry them in pockets and my purse etc. Kyanite and lapis were in the mix and the great news is that I won my case!!! I’ve been unemployable for the past five years due to physical illnesses and ironically the judge took one look at the gigantic paper file that they had on me and he just approved me on the spot! He said that’s the first time he’s ever done that but could see that I am definitely disabled . This changes so much in my life! It was worth taking asa the crystals that I could!

        Blessed be!

        1. Kristy Hodges

Oh wow that’s amazing! I actually thought ‘she’s going to ace this anyway’, but obviously as I don’t know you and we’re just conversing through a comments box, wasn’t going to say it…lol

Am absolutely thrilled that you won and that you’ve taken the time to update me! Thank you, all the hair on my body went up reading your message and am still smiling! I believe you have a lot of……energetic support lets say 😉 May the energy of this change carry you forward with abundance and positivity! Bright blessings and love, Krissy

          1. It was kind of funny when I went to my hearing I forgot that you had to go through security not only did I have a large pick of crystals but both of my pockets were full of them! So I emptied all my crystals on the desk and he looked at me like I was crazy I just said to him that they were for good luck and he said well I think you just might get the luck carrying all these crystals, he wished me goodnight and when I came out of the hearing crying happy tears he said they actually worked! I said to him they do work in their own ways maybe you should look into it! Lol I have him one of my n business cards because I make Healey or if them as well I’m on FB and have my own website if you’re interested in passing info along! If you want no biggie… Thank you for the good vibes I am still shocked that my hearing went so well but I received my paperwork Saturday to prove I was approved! I’m going to frame it lol

            FB: Samantha’s Styles

            Blessed be!

  29. noRasta Bastard

Hey there, thanks for the informative article. I have a couple of questions.
I wasn’t at home for about one month, when I get back after the first night I felt energy drained, like I didn’t slept well and that’s for one week the same, I cleansed the crystals with sound (I have tibetian bowl) before two days but again the same. I don’t have energy, I can’t fall asleep, I don’t have willpower and what else not. Could be the not charging the crystals? I have clear quartz, citrine, lapis lazuli, smoky quartz, amethyst, bloodstone, aventurine, tiger’s eye and black turmaline.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Really sorry to hear that. I wouldn’t think it would be the crystals to be fair as they are all fairly laid back and not ones that would drain you like that. Sounds more like an energetic change within yourself or even in the area in which you live?

However, if you want to be sure it isn’t your crystals, I suggest physically washing them all with water so they are physically clean and refreshed, then leave them in direct sunlight (even on a cloudy day) for half an hour. Then pick them up individually one at a time and ask them where they want to be in your home and put them in that place. Whatever pops into your head first is the right place. Set them with the intention to ‘work for my highest good’ and they will all be definitely cleansed, charged and working in your best interests. Sometimes they do need an extra helping of love and attention so make it an hour or two where you’re free to do the whole process and can give them lots of love whilst you’re at it, ensuring your energy is high and you’re thinking positively etc.

That would be enough to shift energy within them, within you or within your home. Then see how it feels and if nothing changes, I’d say think about what is going on inside yourself. Hope that helps 🙂

Many thanks and have a wonderful day, bright blessings, Krissy

  30. Quick question, i want to cleanse and charge it by burying my blood quartz. Do i have to leave it buried for an extra day or does the cleansing and charging take place all in one day?

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Rose 🙂

Am not sure why, but intuitively I’ve always buried stones for 3 days at a time and simply dig them up when it feels right. So go with whatever feels right to you, but 24 hours should be enough.

Many thanks and have a great day, Krissy

  31. I gifted my friend some Ethiopian Opal. He left it outside among other crystals during the super moon almost two years ago and overnight it changed the color of the Opal to an “amberish ” color overlapping the blues oranges pinks and purples. It’s amazing beautiful. Wondering what thoughts you have on what that process did TO them? Thank you

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Jayklim

Opals are soft, porous minerals. If left out overnight unprotected, it would soak up any water that was in the atmosphere (there is water in every outside atmosphere, regardless of where you are on the globe), which would change the colour spectrum in the Opal.

I would not advise doing that with an Opal. They are soft minerals that should not be placed around water or in wet atmospheres as they’ll soak up that water, which weakens them and may cause them to crumble, fracture or break as well as change colour.

Unfortunately, a slightly boring scientific explanation rather than something cool & holistic, but hope it helps your friend to protect his Opal from future damage. Many thanks and have a great day, Krissy

  32. Anshul Agrawal

Hii….I just want to know the perfect method for cleaning selenite….regards

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Anshul

The perfect method is the one that feels most natural or comfortable to you. It is different for each person. Many thanks, Krissy 🙂

  33. Hi. I just found your blog and now I’m in love. I especially enjoyed this blog post. I have learned many new things and have had questions answered without asking. Thank you for a wonderful blog. I look forward to following you. ?

  34. Hi Kristy, thank you so much for your sincere and informative post! Your reasoning that all crystals need to be cleansed makes sense to me. I am working with crystals for the first time, and just received kyanite, black tourmaline, tiger iron and a few other crystals in the mail. My question is, how WOULD one go about cleansing kyanite? Thanks!

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Lu 🙂

I’d simply pop it in sunlight for half an hour and I also use reiki or sound occasionally as Kyanite seems to like all 3 of those 😉 Have a wonderful day and thanks for the lovely feedback. Bright blessings, Krissy

  35. I am wearing my crystal many times do i need to put it under the sun..thanks

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Raul

If wearing a crystal daily, I’d pop it in the sunshine once or twice a week. I often take mine off at night and hang them from the window latch so they catch the morning sun and are ready to wear when I wake up 🙂 Bright blessings, Krissy 🙂

  36. Ugh, i would have enjoyed this article, but you are really telling us that science has proved that placing crystals under sunlight can rid them of negative energy??? How do you even measure that kind of stuff. And you arent willing to give us any proof on it and tell us to search for it, shows that you have no proof because i didnt find any proof on internet and because you dont have any it really shows you dont know anything.
There is no proof that sunlight is magically better and proven method of charging than moonlight, you totally have made it up

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Anonymous

Firstly, if you’re going to leave negative feedback, please have the guts to leave your name.

Secondly, I am not a scientist and therefore, do not have to write blogs providing full scientific backup and reams of paper to prove what I am saying. It is my creative work, freely given and it won’t resonate with everyone. Which is absolutely fine. Who are you to demand that I back things up with scientific explanations? If you need that kind of logical support, that’s absolutely OK and there are many websites out there that provide exactly what you’re looking for.

What is not OK is to demand that other people do things that make life easy for you and diss them in an unkind way when they don’t. My website is an intuitive one driven by an open heart and intuitive connection. As you need scientific evidence, others feel in their gut whether something is right for them or not. We are all different 😉

It is common knowledge in the mineral kingdom that direct heat and light causes crystals to release negative energy. It happens because the atoms knock together so fast once stimulated, it literally dissipates any negative energy held within. It really isn’t rocket science. If you want to investigate further, try looking at NASA’s work with the space station as they’ve been experimenting with quartz, metals, minerals, heat & light for decades. That was how dichroic glass came about. You could also try looking up the simple term for the science here:

There is plenty of proof, I simply choose to write intuitive based blogs that are easy for people to understand and digest rather than scientific based blogs that appeal to the logical mind only. With regard to the sun and moon, again, I don’t need to prove something that is common knowledge. Look into it yourself if you’re curious or doubtful, do the work to satisfy your own mind instead of expecting others to do it for you. As a start ~ look at what the sun does to our planet and how strong it’s energy is. Then do the same for the Moon. From a scientific perspective, it’s logical and slam dunk. The sun has an effect on quartz at an atomic level. The moon does not. It’s ENERGY workers or those with a strong affinity with the Moon who say the Moon charges crystals, no scientist will EVER say that as it just isn’t possible from a scientific point of view. However, many swear by the energy of the moon so my blog tries to honour that. EVEN though I disagree with it on a scientific level, I respect it from an energy/spiritual level.

Thank you very much for your feedback, have fun investigating the things I’ve recommended above and in future, if you cannot say anything nice to people, please try not saying anything at all and certainly don’t cower behind anonymity! If you’d like some science to back something up, try a private message or to ask nicely. It will get you a lot further in life than leaving nasty comments under an ‘anonymous’ tag on other people’s hard work and creativity. Particularly when you’re dissing something because of your own lack of knowledge and willingness to research something properly yourself.

Have a great day, bright blessings, Krissy.

  37. yasminakoshel

    Hi Krissy,
Thank you for writing this! It’s very direct and easy to follow.

I would really appreciate your help with this one question that I can’t seem to find an answer to.

I am very new with crystals and just got myself an infinite stone. I heard it’s quite rare and am really excited to start using it to sleep better. Unfortenetlly there aren’t a lot of information out there about such stone.

Am not sure which cleansing and energising method is best for it or if it devolves in water, salt, sun etc.

I’ve decided to burry it for the night because I felt like this is the right thing to do to cleanse it but I am not sure what to do to re-energise it.

  38. Quartzhouse

Admiring the commitment you put into your blog and detailed information you offer. It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same unwanted rehashed information. Wonderful read!

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Vint, you can cleanse and charge it using any of the methods in the above blog. It’s up to you to experiment to see which works best for you. Thank you 🙂

  39. Got to say I use both the sunshine and moonlight method for charging and from my personal experience the moon is much much more powerful at charging crystals. I don’t know why- I can’t explain it …. It just is.

This belief wasnt formed by any person “telling me”. Im very very semsitive to crystal energy. I had a very powerful heart based “born again” spiritual awakening experience 3 years back and since then I discovered by accident my sensitivity to crystals. I went to buy a necklace for a friend who was ill and liked crystals. When I walked into the crystal shop they had a 2 foot tall clear quartz crystal in the room and I swear to god I nearly fell over when I walked in. It was like being struck by lightning.

After buying my first crystals and working with them I had no understanding or idea of how they worked. No clue about cleansing or charging. I used them and got great effects for a number of days ….. Then they started to get a really funky energy. Made me feel almost drunk.

I was working with amethyst and then had a clear vivid dream a Little girl came to me and gave me a piece of paper with crystals drawn on it with wires connecting them to batteries. I had no idea what this meant and asked her. She just smiled and offered the piece of paper again.

I woke up thinking am I supposed to run electricity through my crystals. The.coincidemtallg the same morning I got a video pop onto my feed explaining how crystals need to be charged using either moonlight preferably full moon or sunlight.

I looked at the lunar calendar ….. And wouldn’t you know that night was the full moon . And not just any full moon. A blood moon eclipse.

After charging the crystals that night they nearly blew my energy body up. I had powerful powerful detox effects to the point after using my amethyst and green fluorite which felt amazing I became violently ill. Felt like every toxic substance in my body was purged all at once.

Do not under estimate the power of the moon. Crystal energy is more then just the light you see.

    1. Kristy Hodges

That’s amazing David, thanks so much for taking the time to share your story. We are all so uniquely different, I always so go with what feels best to you and you can’t go wrong 🙂

  40. Trina Shanahan

I just inherited a natural onyx tower; approximately 10 inches tall. I can feel the not so good energy, and would like to cleanse it. The sun isn’t very bright today; wondering if I can put it in the windowsill and leave for a few days?
    Thanks so much!

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Trina ~ give it a good wash under a tepid tap so it’s physically clean and a few days on the windowsill should brighten it’s energy. If not, let me know as there’s another trick we can try to reset a crystal’s energy. Have a fab day 🙂

  41. Thank you Kristy, reading this blog helped me very much with cleansing and charging crystals. I do have a question if you have some time to answer. How should I store the crystals that I have? I’m not sure if I should put each one in individual little bags or not. And if so, what material would work best? Thanks again for all that you do. Much kindness, Tammy

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Tammy

Store your crystals in whatever way feels good to you. Some of mine are around the house, others are in bowls, the rarer or more delicate pieces are nestled in acid free tissue paper in little boxes. They can even be placed in little ziploc bags with the added benefit you can write the name on the bag to remind yourself down the line which crystal it is.

There is no right or wrong way to store crystals unless they are being put away for a period of months or years. Just go with what feels right to you Tammy 🙂

  42. Lisa A Gerhard

Hello, I just got back from Salem Massachusetts. While I was in the local shops I came across many tourmaline stones for sale. They had been touched by probably hundreds of people and did not have the same feeling as the ones I ordered on line. Is it possible that they had absorbed too much negativity and were just ineffective because they needed to be cleansed and recharged?

  43. i pout a small-double-terminated piece of green fluorite in a cup of baking soda and water to brush my teeth with. There was also a couple drops of clove oil. It was in there for a about a year. I am carefully recharging it in the sun now. Did I do it any lasting harm?

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Paul, no it won’t have done any harm if you can see no obvious damage to the Fluorite 🙂

  44. Realize this is an older blog but would still like to add a comment about black tourmaline & sunlight. I have a small, low table & sit on the floor to assemble gemstone jewelry. I left some stones, setting out for about 2 hours. The table was about 2 feet away from a window. I was surprised to see that several schorl/black tourmaline nugget beads now have dull, dusty/rusty-looking spots on them. I didn’t realize just how sensitive they are to sunlight. These (formally)shiny, faceted, tourmaline nugget beads cost almost $64. per 15 1/2 inch strand… From now on, I’ll cover them while not in use. Also had blue aventurine vogel’s loose all bluish-grey color, on one side after sitting in sunlight….but I suspect, they’d been dyed & coated.

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Shan

I would say the black tourmaline beads either aren’t pure black tourmaline (some black tourmaline grows with Iron Pyrite), or they’ve been coated in a polishing wax or resin that has caused this dullness to occur in the sun. I’ve had all forms of black tourmaline for two decades now, all sat in direct sunlight in the corner of windowsills all over the house ~ all exactly the same as they were when I bought them. Sorry to hear about the blue aventurine vogel ~ sounds like an amazing piece, but yes, you’re right that it’s been dyed as that shouldn’t fade quickly in the sun at all. Many thanks for your comment and have a great day 🙂

  45. Jolie Kolega

    Hi Krissy
Thanks for the great informative blog I found while doing a google search about selenite.
I am getting back into my crystals again after neglecting them for a few months and would love to gain more knowledge or training in them as I believe I’ve forgotten who I am and am now just waking up after a big change in life cycle. I’m based in Australia and have step family in Devon UK.
Do you have a Instagram or other page I could follow for information and advice as I feel a great connection with your wisdom on the subject and would love to absorb everything thing I can from you about crystals.
    Thank you and blessings ✨

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Jolie, lovely to hear from you and that you’re getting back into crystals. You can sign up for my newsletter on the right hand side of the home page under SIGN UP FOR MONTHLY ENERGY FORECAST & NEWS. Alternatively, I’ve got a Facebook page Serendipity Crystals. Keep shining and enjoy the site, bright blessings, Krissy 🙂

  46. This is the best article I’ve read about cleansing versus charging—straight to the point and clear! And I was laughing throughout the comments too—with your sass and smarts, I hope you write a crystal book!

Here’s my question: do rhe crystals need to be outside or under in an open window to charge in the sun, or do you find that they charge through glass? My plants do fine with sun through the glass, but my doctor says that I don’t get vitamin D unless I’m actually outside, so that’s why I’m wondering:)

    1. Kristy Hodges

Bless you Isha and thank you for the awesome feedback. It’s much appreciated 🙂

You can put your crystals outside or have them inside on a windowsill. They get charged the same. Just remember only half an hour for the purple/pink toned crystals and if you have any concerns that a crystal might fade in the sunlight. Have an awesome day, blessings, Krissy

  47. Hello Kristy, thanks for your article, I have been studying crystals for a long time and I agree with your point of view, however, how to expose the crystal under sunlight can be inappropriate. with rocks like agate, malachite. I will replace it by using frankincense or essential oils to clean the crystal

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Neja

Agate will fade in sunlight, yes, but Malachite, not that I’m aware of. Mine has been sitting on the windowsill for two decades now and no difference whatsoever. I never ever use oils on crystals personally, but would place them next to the crystals as an indirect method. Particularly with a mineral that contains metal, like Malachite. If the copper elements within a sealed, polished stone get damp, they literally create rust and the oils would damage the top layer of Malachite over time. Hope that helps 🙂

  48. The best article on cleansing and charging. Howver, I have some confusion on sunlight and moonlight cleansing. Does the crystals need to be under direct sunlight or under the night sky? I am staying in an apartment. Usually i place my crystal on the windowsill but no rays shines on the crystals. The same for the moonlight bath. Does it still cleanse if the crystals are under shades and not under direct sunlight or under the night sky?

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Maguir ~ sunlight is really strong, even through clouds or we wouldn’t experience daylight. It is therefore fine to pop your crystals on a windowsill on a cloudy day and they will still cleanse/charge, no problem. I would say they have to be under the direct light of the moon to receive lunar energy. It is your choice whether you wish to charge by Sun or Moon, so go with what feels best to you. Many thanks 🙂

  49. Hi what do you think about Tesla Positive Energy Purple Plate . I heard they can cleanse and charge Crystal’s ?

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hiyah ~ yes, I’ve heard that too, but have yet to experiment with one. Please do let me know if you get one and how/if it works 🙂

  50. Hello Kristy,
Thank you so much for the valuable information You handle yourself and your work with much grace and kindness.
I have only been working with crystals for a while and am still learning lots. I especially appreciate the information about the sun cleansing/charging Crystals. I have not put my pink or purple stones out for quite a while as one of my first amethyst stones faded to white 🙁 I have recently purchased some Rhodozite crystals. I will now put them in the sun to cleanse and charge. Do you have any recommendations for beginning to work with them? Even though they are very tiny, I understand they have very powerful amplication abilities. Or if you can recomend a good website. Any information will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you and have a wonderful day, Kathleen

      Hi Kathleen

Love Rhodozite! I’d place a piece in the palm of each hand, settle down into a meditation and ask for expansion. Then imagine your aura or energy field expanding out into the Universe as far as it can go. See how that feels & let me know 🙂 Many thanks, Krissy

  51. Hi Kristy,
Can you please how to cleanse the black obsidian bracelet? Is it ok if I running the bracelet under tap water? Thank you and appreciated for advice.

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Amanda

To physically cleanse it, wash it in tap water. To energetically cleanse it, pop it in sunlight for half an hour. Many thanks, Krissy

  52. Hello Can U tell me If Brown rice proven to cleanse and charge Crystal and Obsidian pendent?

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi ~ brown rice will drain away and clear all the negative energy, but it will not charge a crystal afterwards. Many thanks and have a great day 🙂

  53. Hi there. Love all your thoughtful hard work put into this amazing article. I have a quick question: I put my angel aura quartz in sun for about 30 mins (maybe less) and now the aura aspect is much stronger, more vibrant. I’m not complaining! It’s beautiful. Just wondering if you have any insight into what would cause this. It happened to two separate pieces purchased from different sources. Much love and light.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Cita ~ lovely to hear from you & thank you very much for the positive feedback. Firstly, crystals do change when they are fully charged in sunlight ~ they can seem shinier, brighter and generally sparkly and happier as they are cleansed and vibing high.

Any Aura Quartz isn’t one I’d leave on a windowsill for more than half an hour, but the pieces I have occasionally left for a lot longer haven’t had any change on their surface. If the surface is changing dramatically under sunlight, I’d say they haven’t used the proper vacuum metalising process ~ which bonds the precious metals & quartz at a mollecular level. Keep your pieces out of direct sunlight when they aren’t being charged and ensure they’re only charged for half an hour at a time ~ just to be on the safe side ~ and they should be OK. Gut feel however is your crystals love being cleansed and charged and are showing off how gorgeous they are when they feel great 😉 lol

  54. As someone who spends his life surrounded by crystals rocks and minerals and who also writes about them but not for the purpose of crystal healing, I have to say I really enjoyed this article. 😁

  55. Hello, I have a black obsidian necklace I cleansed it last night but neglected to charge it last night should I cleanse it again before charging it?!

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Joedi ~ if you’ve worn the necklace again, I’d cleanse it before charging it personally, but that’s just how I work with cleansing/charging. Always go with whatever feels right to you as we’re all different 🙂

  56. Thank you so much for this blog! I know it’s an old blog, but it really made a lot of sense. You gave evidence of why, and it makes perfect sense. I know have my million crystals dotted around catching the sun. ❤️

    1. Kristy Hodges

Awesome, thanks so much for taking the time to comment Dawn, much appreciated and enjoy your lovely, sunshine charged crystals 🙂

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Kristi ~ it really depends on how you’re using them and for what length of time. If I was to use a crystal in a meditation or healing session, I’d cleanse and charge it immediately afterwards. If it was a mineral being used for protection, every few days. If it’s one you’re wearing as jewellery or carrying in a pocket for any length of time, I’d probably cleanse and charge them once a week. Always trust your own gut however. If something feels icky or that it’s not working as it usually does, even if that is only after a few hours, go right ahead and cleanse/charge it as we all work with crystal energy differently. I’ve picked up crystals before and drained the energy from them right on the spot as my system has needed it so badly. As a general guide however, I’d say 3-5 days to be on the safe side. Many thanks and thanks for asking a great question as it will really help others too 🙂

      1. Fantastic article, tysm. Its not often that i learn so much from a single blog post + I’m grateful! (It’s older tho, I hope you see my comment…)

I’ve only recently been working w synergy 12 stones, + info is rare (from external sources, haha). anyway, I got out my 2 selenite plates that I keep moldavite, phenakite + Herkimer diamonds on (believing the selenite was keeping them charged). I said, now what’s really going on here? Turns out, the synergy stones are the ones charging up the selenite (plus the special lower vibe stones I keep w them)! Haha!! At least, that’s what it feels like.

As always, when I check incoming info against the crystals/stones themselves, they say shh, ssh, just listen to us + you’ll be fine…😂

Great blog; I can’t wait to read more. Bright blessings!

        1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Ari, yes, it’s an oldie, but goodie 😉 I bet your Selenite plate felt out of this World? I do agree that it’s good to learn and research lots of information, yet at the end of the day, take what resonates and what the stones feel to be right for them. They hold such wisdom and a lot of it cannot be found in books. It can only be experienced IMHO. Thanks so much for commenting Ari and have a wonderful journey with your fabulous pieces. With gratitude, Krissy

  57. Thank you for this really useful article. With regard to leaving crystals in sunlight on a windowsill, it might be worth adding the caveat to be careful that the sun doesn’t turn the crystal into a lens and, by focussing its light, burn or set fire to surrounding materials (just like children were taught to do with a magnifying glass to create fire)! We should always be careful of this, especially with spheres.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Absolutely spot on Susan, thank you for adding that very important factor! Much appreciated 🙂

  58. Michelle Van Dyke

Thank you so much for this important information. I had always been told that selenite and black tourmaline never needed cleaning and recharging. That was many years ago. I’m so glad I found your article! I have many years of heavy cleansing and recharging to attend to. I’m actually really looking forward to it because I know how my spaces will feel when I’m done!

    1. Kristy Hodges

It’s one heck of a job once you start it Michelle (if you are an avid collector like myself), but soooooo much fun. The crystals and house feel amazing when they’re all cleansed and charged up 🙂 I do one room a day when the sun is shining. A wheelbarrow might be a good investment 😉 LOL x

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi, not that I am aware of. Sound can only cleanse/charge if it is of high volume and vibration, such as a tuning fork or singing bowls.

  59. Hi what is your experience of selentite cleansing bowls for putting crytstals in do they work or is sunlight the best option? Also do you use both raw and polished stones? Or is raw better? Thank you loved ur article :0)

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Caz, I use whatever stones jump out at me with no preference. Polished are great for carrying on my person whilst rough is awesome to work with during therapies or when working with Crystal Grids. Sunlight is always the best option as you’d have to cleanse the Selenite bowl each and every time you used it to clean other crystals as it will absorb all of their energetic muck and hold on to it. Might be easier to put 10 tumblestones in one bowl and cleanse the bowl however. Always go with what feels best to you and you can’t go wrong 🙂 Many thanks and bright blessings, Krissy

  60. Hello Kristy,

Thank you for the informative information. I do have a question. How will I know if 30 minutes is enough time in sunlight? I have many different types of crystals (some I am not sure what exactly they are), but I want to make sure they are all cleansed and charged. Thank you Michelle from Michigan

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Michelle ~ it actually only takes about 5-10 minutes maximum in sunlight to cleanse and charge a crystal. We say up to half an hour just in case it’s a cloudy day (as sunlight still pours through the clouds, it’s just not as strong). So there really would be no need to cleanse/charge in sunlight for any longer time than that. The process of sunlight breaking down energy in crystals is pretty fast. If a crystal still felt ‘icky’ or unhappy, then it may be clogged up with a lot more energy or programming than sunlight can manage. In this case, I’d suggest popping it inside a ziploc bag and burying it in the Earth for a few days to see if that can completely drain the negative energy away and recharge/reset the energy. Some crystals simply prefer this method. Hope that helps, but please do drop me a line if you need any further info. Bright blessings, Krissy

  61. Cherry Blackmore

I just ensure my crystals rest in indirect sunlight. Makes everything much easier, unless I have to repel a nasty entity. Property gridding isn’t too practical for a second-floor flat – and I’m not a fan of grids anyway – so I sort it out myself with a Silverlight Quartz which I bought at the foot of Glastonbury Tor in 1994 and immediatrly cleansed in the White Well. It’s exceptionally pure and stunning for sending nasties packing – and helping the odd stranded soul to the Light, which I haven’t done in a long time now – so I hope it never leaves me like some others have done.

  62. I’ve read somewhere that leaving crystals in a dark wooden box for a month or two can sometimes restore colors that were faded from sunlight. Is there any truth to this?

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi, I haven’t found that to be the case personally. Once a colour fades, it means the chemical of that colour has broken down within the crystal, so it’s impossible to get that back again. Mind you, this is the world of crystals and magic, so never say never 😉 On a practical level however, no, it’s not really possible.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Shirley, love that you asked this question as you’ve picked a meteorite, which doesn’t work in the same way other minerals do. This is because it is not 100% made of elements found on Earth. From my own, personal experience, Moldavite likes to be laid on the ground when there are meteor showers. That is the only time I’ve ever noticed it’s vibrations getting faster (by quite a lot!). I’ve never had to cleanse mine and having spoken to many who use this magical meteorite, they haven’t either. It would never harm to pop it in sunlight or moonlight if that felt right to you, it just doesn’t seem to alter the vibration of the Moldavite in a way that can be felt by most and it doesn’t appear to ever absorb any negative energy, so doesn’t need to be cleansed energetically. This particular meteorite is a law unto itself, so go with your gut and you’ll be doing what’s right for you. Hope that helps 🙂

  63. Hi there, I’ve just started my journey with crystals and currently I have Amazonite, White Howlite and Morganite bracelets. In my work as a massage therapist we have always cleansed hit stones with moonlight- so sunlight is going to be a completely new way to cleanse my stones. I am excited to try this!

Could I place my bracelets on a selenite plate when I’m not wearing them and then cleanse them all in sunlight together? I’d like to learn so much more about crystals and healing and their energies but as there’s so much rubbish out there I’m so wary of what to read/ believe.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Victoria, lovely to hear from you. I’d love to see if your bracelets feel any differently after being cleansed/charged in sunlight. Absolutely, you could pop them on a Selenite charging plate, as long as the plate is charged regularly itself.

I wouldn’t leave them out on a bright, sunny day however. Half an hour at most as Morganite can fade if left in direct sunlight. It would take months for it to do so, but it’s best to use best practice right from the get go. I have left things on windowsills, totally forgotten about them and regretted it later!

You’re right, there is so much misinformation out there around the mineral kingdom. I would give yourself the space to explore how they work for you, for we are all different. Take the information that resonates or feels right to you and leave the rest. Or find a few sites that feel good and seem to have solid information and just refer to those as standard. If you read too many things from too many places, it can all become a bit muddled and confusing! With bright blessings, Krissy x

  64. Hello! Much appreciation for your article and replies to people. I tried to scan them all to see if my question had been asked but I didn’t see it (apologies if I missed it). Is it ok to cleanse a whole bunch of different ones in the same bowl of salt water (obviously all being safe in salt water)? I use the pink Himalayan salt… are any crystals not good together in a bowl? Is there a limit? Ect…. Thanks so much! Just got a ton of pendants and such to begin making my jewelry making biz a reality and to go with my healing sessions as well, I’ve always cleansed crystals/gems alone but now I have a lot so it’s worth asking! Thanks again! Love, Light and Appreciation!

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Wendy 🙂 I personally wouldn’t place a bunch of crystals together in salt water. An individual quartz here or there perhaps, but never a mixed bunch in salt. I’d just pop them in a bowl on a windowsill so they get regular sunlight (not hot/direct sunlight for more than a few hours though). When I get a bunch of new crystals, I lay them on the bed under beams of sunlight for a few hours so they’re all safe, well and fully cleansed/charged. If you do want to use salt on a good amount of crystals, be aware some may come away damaged, less shiny or weaker in their formation than before. Rice or Dry salt is OK. Wet salt, not so much unless you’re working with clear forms of quartz or giving crystals a quick wash/blessing in the sea. I’ve simply had too many crystals become damaged in some way using salt to be able to recommend it, am really sorry about that. Much love and sending tons of abundant, expansive, beautiful energy for your new jewellery making biz! With love, Krissy.

  65. Hello !!

I am very new to crystals and I have obtained quite the collection of them. (All being beginner friendly) I had a hard time understanding how to set intentions into your stones, what you want them to do for you, how do I do that and what is the best and most effective way. I have been cleansing and charging then since I got them and I don’t want to accidentally put negative thoughts/feelings/energies into them.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Carlee, great question! For me personally, I hold a crystal in whichever hand feels more comfortable and imagine energy pouring in from the Universe through the top of my head. I visualise the energy as silvery, white and sparkly and as it washes through the mind, I think of the instruction I’d like to give the crystal. Keep it simple, such as ‘support me in being kinder to myself’ or ‘assist me in journeying’ or ‘release negative emotions’. I then imagine that thought being carried down my arm by the silvery light and into the crystal.

If am not sure what I’d like a crystal to do, but feel drawn to use it, I simply program it to ‘Work for my highest good’ and trust that’s exactly what will happen.

I wouldn’t worry about putting negative energy into crystals as many of them won’t absorb it and the ones that do, do so from a place of protecting you, of easing the energy so you can work through it – or to then reflect that energy back to you in a different way so you can learn something from it. It’s normal for our crystals to work with fast, slow, positive or negative energies. That’s why we cleanse and recharge them after or before using them. Hope that helps, with bright blessings, Krissy

  66. Thank you for explaining all of this so nicely! It’s a big help for people like me who are just beginning this wonderful journey

  67. This blog is amazing and I just want to thank you for putting your time and creativity into making this for everyone! I just have a couple of questions first one is regarding charging in the sunlight. I know you say 30 minutes is enough to cleanse and charge any Crystal even on a cloudy day but do you need to take them away from sunlight for a period of time and put them back in the sunlight for another 30 minutes again and so on or is 30 minutes enough to fully cleanse your crystal and recharge it? I just want to make sure.

Also I have just purchased a long bar of selenite and I am going to cleanse and charge it as it will be quite big is 30 minutes in the sun going to be long enough as it will be quite a bit bigger? I feel like I’m asking stupid questions but I’m so new to this.

Thank you so much for putting your time and hard work into this!

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Emily

Thanks so much for the lovely feedback, it’s much appreciated. 30 minutes in sunlight per day is enough to cleanse and charge any crystal. If it isn’t being used at all (ie. just sat in the house somewhere), I cleanse/charge those once every few weeks if they’re working (such as Shungite to protect from EMFs) or once a month if they aren’t doing anything specific. If they’re in a drawer and am not using them at all, then I don’t charge them until I feel drawn to use them. Pop them on the grass in a garden or on a windowsill half an hour before use.

I leave any of mine that aren’t in danger of fading in sunlight on a windowsill or shelves that will get some sun during the day. So they’re always ready to go. It’s only the pink/purple ones that will fade if left in sunlight for too long. 30 minutes is enough for any crystal, even one the size of a person. It’s the reaction that takes place when heat/light hit a crystal that is important and it only takes a little bit of natural sunlight to create that reaction.

No question is a stupid question to me Emily, so please freely ask whatever you need to ensure you’re comfortable working with your crystals. With love and bright blessings, Krissy

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Carolyn ~ I’d pop it in sunlight for half an hour. Many thanks & have a lovely day 🙂

  68. Hi Krissy, an old post I know but only just getting into crystals and found your site. I just wanted to say that what grace you answered the ignoramous‘anonymous’ with. Clearly they desperately need crystals in their life being so angry and ignorant. Well done you for the cal response. Xx

    1. Kristy Hodges

Thank you very much to the non ignoramous ‘anonymous’ ~ really made me smile, thank you, love Krissy x

  69. Mifuyu Kato

This is the best article on cleansing and recharging crystals around. Appreciate your time and effort for sharing with us these tips. A quick practical question, referring to the tables and some of your comments above, does this means with a newly acquired (like purchased, given) crystal, we should leave it under sunlight for longer than half an hour? Or half an hour is enough in most cases (newly acquired or regularly used crystals)? Where I live (SouthEast Asia), the sunlight is super strong anyhow.

Thank you again for your kindness to share.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Mifuyu, thank you for the lovely feedback, am glad you’ve found the article helpful. I usually charge a new crystal ~ although ones that am drawn to buy in person, I tend to cleanse/charge after a few days. After all, I’ve been drawn to the energy as it is in my hand, so I usually work with that for a little while first. Crystals that are gifted I tend to charge straight away. If you’re in South East Asia, half an hour is enough in any case, but definitely in the early morning or late evening when the sun’s rays aren’t as strong. Hope that helps and have a wonderful journey with your crystals. Krissy 🙂

  70. Thankyou so much for this pretty clear description of the difference between and methods of Cleansing/charging crystals… I recently got some for my birthday so i am new to the crystal world, but im very much looking forward to learning more. I currently have a clear quartz, Jade, purple agate and lapis… if there us anything in particular you feel i should know about these then let me know 🙂 I plan to cleanse & charge them all in the sun tomorrow!

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi and thank you for the great feedback, it’s much appreciated. I’d be mindful of the purple agate being left out in direct sunlight as it is likely to fade. Your other stones would be absolutely fine on a windowsill 24/7. Hope that helps & you have a wonderful day, with bright blessings, Krissy 🙂

  71. Hey how do I cleanse and also how do I charge green moss agate necklace and any and all I do about the care and use of this stone please I would appreciate it so much I’m new to crystals ❤️

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Cici, please just follow the instructions in the blog. It is very clear in explaining which methods can be used and these apply to ALL crystals unless mentioned. Half an hour in sunlight is enough to charge any crystal and Moss Agate won’t fade in sunlight. Have fun with your sparkly journey 🙂 With bright blessings, Krissy.

  72. son glad i found this page and I reasonate a lot with what you shared. I use the sun mainly and love to place my crystals where sun can shine in as my windows are pretty full. rofl. jut wondering with the sun technique, will be 30mins of cleansing, then giving it intention to get charged for another 30mins. or can these be combined?

on the topic of using reiki to charge, how do you know if it got charged?

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi 🙂 I just set the intention when placing the crystal in the sun ~ to cleanse and recharge. Both will occur easily within 30 minutes, so combining them makes sense/saves time. Reiki is a hard one. As an energy worker, I feel the energy in my hands and within the crystal. So can actually feel if it has worked. I have no idea how other reiki masters would be able to tell, but it’s a good question to ask a few as I’d imagine, there would be quite a few different answers. Each of us works in our own, unique way. Many thanks, Krissy

  73. Have you updated this since 2015? Does your insight still stand the same since then? Has any of your viewpoints changed or can you give us more insight on this same topic if anything has changed?

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Shelby ~ I originally wrote the article in 2015, but regularly change or update blogs if new information comes to light. The methods of cleansing and charging crystals hasn’t changed much in my lifetime. Sunlight is still the most natural, cheap and effective way to cleanse and charge any mineral. I would assume that is why no one has ever explored any other methods ~ as those related to vibration are the ones that work. Hope that helps, have a wonderful day 🙂

  74. I just bought a carnelian necklace, a tigers eye bracelet and a red jasper stone. I want to both cleanse and charge them with sunlight. Should i leave them for 30 minutes under the sun to both cleanse and charge them or 60 minutes to cleanse and charge them? thank you so much you have helped me loads!

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Sofia ~ just half an hour will cover both the cleansing and charging. Hope that helps and have a wonderful day 🙂 x

  75. hi – I’d love to know where you got the scientific info from about what has and what hasn’t been proven. I’d also love to hear your thoughts on HOW crystal heal;ing works from a scientific point of view.

My understanding is that the energy field of tyhe crystal interacts with our own energy fielld and entrainment takes place (i.e. both energy fields try to replicate the other, so in effect both end up the same – the average of the two. As the crystal has a more stable energy field it only looks a little different after it has been used, but our unstable enegy field is cahnged a lot and becomes a lot more stable than it was, thus creating better conditions for the body to heal itself).

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Claire

Lovely to hear from you and thank you for connecting 🙂 As I’m not a scientist, I prefer not to provide the scientific information as it is so easily available on Google. I’ve learned through experience, through working with those who are academic/science based and a lot of what I was taught or learned has been over time and in the field, not from books or websites ~ over 30 years worth! You could try searching for piezoelectricity and experiments on crystals and electrical charges perhaps? I learned enough to gain the logical understanding, so my Ego stopped looking for ‘proof’ all the time. Since then, I’ve been guided and trust/use my intuition, which has never let me down.

Your understanding and explanation is great, although I’d say the frequency of crystals can lower or raise our personal vibrations, rather than the two energy fields always balancing out as an average. Sometimes they average out, sometimes not, it really does depend on the person and the crystal being used ~ as we are all so different. There’s also this blog that you might find helpful

      With love, Krissy

  76. Another excellent method for both charging and cleansing crystals, that I have found to work is your breathe. Connect at your heart centre, hold the intention of cleansing or charging, and then release a short sharp blow.
Also, I’d never recommend leaving a Quartz sphere in the sun for any length of time, or if you do, it needs to be watched. I have seen two fires start very quickly from Quartz spheres.
With regards to clear Quartz and salt, over time, I have experienced clear Quartz going cloudy.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Tracy ~ I’ve never used breath externally, so can only recommend what I’ve tried personally ~ although thinking about it, it definitely could move energy if blown hard enough as we were taught how to use our breath when studying shamanism. I’ve just not used it with crystals. Yes, salt will erode the surface of any polished crystal over time. Hence why sunlight is the preferred method and I would hope most would be wise to the refraction of light through glass being capable of creating a fire and keep an eye on their spheres or any large Quartz pieces accordingly. Thanks so much for sharing your experience, it’s most welcome 🙂
