How to Feel and Choose a Crystal

One of the questions I often get asked is ‘How do I feel a crystal?’.

I meet many people that do not feel anything from crystals on a physical level. If you fall into this category, please don’t worry ~ only 15% of the population is said to be able to ‘feel’ crystals with their hands. Whether we can feel them or not is based purely on our base vibration as a human being. Some people have very low vibrations, some have very high vibrations so some people can feel or sense other frequencies and some cannot (in this instance, a low or high base vibration has no correlation to how spiritually advanced we may be).

My base vibration is generally very low, my blood pressure has always been low (even whilst giving birth!), my heart beat is slightly slower and my resting body temperature is also slightly lower than the norm. I think this is one of the reasons I can easily sense and pick things up from crystals (purely my own thoughts on the matter, I have no references for this other than a gut feeling). I cannot work with Hematite as it has such a low, dense vibration and pulls my natural state way too low to handle, making me feel sick. When I work spiritually however, it seems that my low, base vibration is what keeps me grounded and anchored as everything else goes through the roof! Its very odd and I find it all fascinating 😉

If you’re not sure how to feel a crystal on a physical level, all you have to do is wander around a crystal shop and see what you are drawn to. If you simply want to test whether you can feel crystals or not, work with Moldavite, Selenite or Shungite. These all have very high vibrations, so if you’re going to feel a crystal, these may elicit some form of sensation.

Try hovering your hand a few centimetres above any crystal that catches your eye. I recommend doing this with your left hand as energy tends to enter the body on our left hand side and exit the body on the right ~ this is why many reiki therapists will automatically put their right hand out to give reiki, even if they are left handed. It isn’t something a lot of people are conscious of and there will always be those that work the other way round. However, the majority will sense more when ‘feeling’ things with their left hand rather than their right. Try it with one hand, then the other and see if either of them work.

When hovering their hand over a crystal, some people feel warmth in the palm of their hand, others feel cold, some may feel a tingle or pulse ~ we are all different, so will feel them in different ways. However, the sense is that generally, you will feel something in your hand on a physical, tangible level. Generally for me, heat tends to indicate that a crystal is working on a physical level, tingling indicates it is spiritual and cold is most definitely working on an emotional or mental issue. Again, we are all different in this, but I’ve found it is very helpful to learn what the different sensations mean to us as individuals.

If you aren’t certain you’re feeling anything when hovering a hand over a crystal, pick it up and hold it gently in the palm of your left hand without closing your fingers around it. Give it a minute and see whether you can feel anything then.

At this point, some people may begin to feel a tingle or sensation moving from their hand an up their arm. Others may feel a sensation somewhere else in their body as the energy of the crystal goes directly to the source of energetic imbalance and starts to do it’s work. Sometimes we may feel a crystal stimulating our chakra system, so for example, may feel light headed or floaty around the head and third eye area between our eyebrows. I will often feel an emotion when holding a crystal too, such as joy, happiness, confidence or strength.

If you’ve tried the above and don’t feel anything at all, but are still strangely drawn to crystals, I would recommend working with them visually. On a spiritual level, not everyone ‘feel’s.  Some people ‘see’ so will be drawn to the colour, size or shape of a crystal. They won’t be able to feel anything on a physical level, but they will keep coming back to a crystal as the image, colour or patterning ~ something on a visual level has stayed clearly in their mind. Its the same with those who work on auditory levels ~ they won’t feel anything, they won’t have images or visual prompts to connect them to a crystal, but they will hear things in their mind, words or information that will draw them back to the crystal time and time again until they have to work with it.

You may not experience any of the above, but that doesn’t mean that crystals aren’t for you. They are still vibrating and working with your energy system, you just can’t feel it. In this instance, it’s about trusting your intuition and following your gut. When talking to people about their love of crystals, so many of them say ‘I don’t know why am drawn to them, I just like them’. However, if you can remember when you obtained a crystal and look up what that crystal means ~ it will always correlate to whatever is happening in your life at that time.

So when it comes to choosing a crystal, simply go with your gut. Whether its because you felt something, because it looks pretty, because it makes you smile, because it causes you to think or feel someting…..how you are drawn to it doesn’t matter, its WHY you are drawn to it that’s important.

If you aren’t sure, walk away for awhile. If something is meant for you, it will keep popping up in your mind, niggling until you have to go back and purchase it. Or walk away and go and do some research, find out why you’re being drawn to a particular crystal ~ if it resonates with whatever is going on in your life at that time, go back and buy it. There is a reason our intuition leads us to these beautiful metaphysical tools. Crystals are made of the same chemicals we are and have similar vibrations to our own, so they can help immensely!

Many people like to feel crystals or see them in person rather than buying online, but purchasing from a distance sort’ve works the same way. You’ll see something online and it will keep niggling at you because you are meant to work together, so trust that feeling (as long as it is a safe/reputable website or seller). If you’re cautious, leave it for a week and do the research mentioned above. You’ll be brought back to that crystal again and again if it is meant to be.

I hope you’ve found the above helpful. Have a wonderful day

Bright blessings

What a wonderful way to explain this. We are not all the same, so why should we all react the same to crystals. Thank you for such a thoughtful article!

    1. Thanks for taking the time to comment Teri and for your lovely, positive words. Have a fantastic day 🙂

  2. Thank you for the wonderful article. I believe I’m one who doesn’t feel the vibrations and often wondered if the crystals were even charged. I’m very new at this but thanks to you and your insight I can try the suggestions you have mentioned.

  3. While hlding an agate I dropped to my knees and burst out crying and my left arm went numb. Ever since now my left hand and arm have regular tingling and numbing. Is this normal

    1. Sometimes we get those feelings when a crystal has done some release work on us and it takes awhile for our system to adjust to that energetic difference. Or that shift in energy when you connected to the Agate may have awakened some dormant sensory abilities ~ a good way to channel that out of your hands (mine often tingle or burn) is to learn reiki as this will remove the sensations.

  4. Great article, and intersting read. I love how you mention how we all see crystals in different ways its very true in what you say.

Im currently working on blog content about all sorts of wonderul things, crystals being one of the many subjects, that will be published very soon at http://www.bohome.uk – we are very new business and we are in a working progress, very exciting!!!

Keep up the great content krissy

    Warmest Wishes

  5. when i hold crystals i feel very small tingling sensations at my fingers but i can’t tell if it’s from the crystal or if it’s just my hand reacting to being still. what do you reckon i should do?

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Zing

That tingling is your energy coming into contact with the energy of the crystal. Those two sets of atoms coming into contact create a vibration ~ imagine molecules rubbing up against each other, creating friction. What you’re feeling is that ‘friction’ if you like, it’s energy. It can be a bit strange at first as who knew crystals vibrated and some of us can physically feel that? 😉

It’s nothing to worry about, perfectly normal and not everyone feels this, so it tells me you’re energy sensitive, which is cool 🙂 Try holding a piece of Moldavite, Danburite or Apophyllite. Those are high vibrations so you may feel a lot more than a small tingle in your fingers. I often feel sensations in other areas of my body, can feel heat or tingling moving up my arm, I’ll feel instantly calm or energised etc. We all feel crystals in different ways, but that physical ability only exists with about 10% of the population so you could explore that more if you wished.

Have a great day, bright blessings, Krissy

  6. I put an amethyst on my forehead and it started vibrating, is that a sign of energy connection or something else?

    1. Kristy Hodges

The vibrations are a result of the Amethyst coming into contact with your auric field and those atoms rubbing up against each other (think of when we create heat through friction by rubbing our hands together).

It’s a sign that you are sensitive to some energies and that the Amethyst is a good third eye crystal for you to be working with. Those vibes don’t happen for everyone and they only happen when the crystal can help you in some way 🙂

  7. Wow…thank you so much for this post, it explains a lot. I’ve always knew I could feel crystal (my mom is the same way). However, I stopped pursuing that “spiritual” side of me mainly because I was very logical…and my mom didn’t feel comfortable for me to continue learning about crystal or any sort of “energy” spiritual stuff…

However, recently I went through kind of a heartbreak in love, I absolutely felt spiritual and is unstoppable, I’m seeing number synchronicity everyday now and I really don’t think I’m crazy by now (I though I was going crazy but I’m not). I’m pretty sure I’m going through the spiritual awakening phase…it is not fun and I am trying my best to keep my calm and be balance (I need balance in life, I’ma Libra lol) but whatever comes my way I will accept. I obtained Celestite Geode and Calcite just two days ago, they are beautiful and yes I felt extreme energy from both (funny only from my left hand, never understand that but now I do after reading your post, energy in and energy out), cooling sensation from the Celestite and tingling from the Calcite. Later noticed Celestite is helpful for spiritual development and third eye, crown chakra (just some website information I googled…not sure if is right), it keeps harmony and peace and has calming effect. Seems exactly what I needed right now…there’s a reason why I was drawn to it. And amazingly, I’ve also started learning tarot and oracle cards reading, my soul tree cards reveal I need to work on my third eye and crown chakra last week…(yes, I was shock after I research about Celestite use after I bought it). There is no coincidence, everything happens for a reason.

Looking back, I probably should have started pursuing my interest in crystals and tarot and develop my spirituality (including self-love). I felt it was meant to be, and if something is meant to be, you are not meant to stop it, you just can’t. It will eventually come to you.

Appreciate for your post, it is very helpful 🙂

  8. I feel more with my right hand some times it is a feeling other times it is hot and other time it is a gut feeling and other time it is just because I like the crystal I just started working with them. I feel so happy when I have them with me all the time thank you so much

  9. I am new to crystals and have always had an interest in them. I found this very interesting. I just bought a labradorite heart shaped custom necklace. When I put it on my chest or heart area immediately feels cold and as soon as I take it off the sensation goes away. What does this mean? I also bought a polychrome jasper heart necklace but I haven’t worn it yet.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Gloria ~ when crystal feels cold, that usually tells me they are working on an emotional or spiritual level ~ so I’d look at those aspects of the properties of Labradorite. If you pop in on a windowsill in the sunshine so it’s cleansed and charged before wearing, it’ll also warm up a little and may not feel so cold on your chest. Hope that helps and have a lovely day 🙂

  10. I have recently been drawn to crytals, particularly selenite . I was just holding my wand and getting familiar with it when i suddenly felt cold. My right leg which was injured last year in a fall felt deeply cold. I dont know why, but i started running the wand over where my leg aches the most. On my leg the wand felt ice cold, yet in my hand that was holding it it felt very warm. Im not sure if this is real, or me just wanting to feel something?

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Joy ~ the energy tends to go cold for me when am working with emotional or spiritual energy (as opposed to mental/physical). So I’d say you’re releasing or clearing some of the emotional energy behind your leg injury. For example, our knees are a fear of moving forwards or heart chakra related. Our calves represent our solar plexus chakra etc. The chakra system runs up our limbs in the same way it does our body. So hands/feet are the base, ankles/wrists the sacral, calves and forearms are tantien/solar plexus etc. Hope that makes sense? Let me know if not and have a great day 🙂

  11. Mehmoona Mirza

Hi..i just wore Turqoise yesterday n i started having headache n pressure on eyes ….wat is this…is this suitable for me or not?..plz replymmm

    1. Kristy Hodges

      Hi Mehmoona

Please read the blog on the front page of my website on cleansing and charging our crystals and new purchases. I would first ensure your jewellery has been cleansed and charged. Ask it to work ‘for my highest good’.

If it still causes you a headache, please try to wear it for short periods of time and see how you feel. It may be that the energy of the Turquoise is simply trying to clear some stuck energy from your system, but sometimes this can feel a little uncomfortable. Let me know how you get on please 🙂 Many thanks and bright blessings, Krissy x

  12. Hi,

I am left handed and require suggestion as to which hand should I wear my crystal bracelets in? Please advise.

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Radhika ~ I would always wear a bracelet on whichever wrist feels comfortable to you. There is no right or wrong as we are all different. Many thanks and have a great day 🙂 Krissy

  13. Hi Krissy, I just found your article randomly (or was it) and it was really informative and straight to the point. Loved it thank you. I am fairly new to crystals but I am loving them, Amerthyst not always but when place on top of my head or forehead, has some pressure and swirling of energy, I really the energy moving around and around in my skull, I like it haha. So hopefully that is doing something good. And I am looking at Auralite 23, so drawn to this because of its power, I am so wanting and ready to open more spiritually, pineal gland, energy, gut, intuition, and this one seems to have a lot of this kind of energy, I would love to know your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks so much. Lisa

    1. Kristy Hodges

Hi Lisa, so glad the blog resonated for you. I’d say go with whatever your intuition guides you towards as our own, Higher Self, knows exactly what we can use to support/empower ourselves. Auralite 23 is a fabulous energy and really works to open us up to our own gifts ~ or whatever is getting in the way of our stepping into those gifts. Maybe just make you have something grounding nearby for after you work with it ~ such as Red Jasper or whatever tends to bring you back down to Earth. I find eating something helps to ground me too. 😉 Enjoy your sparkly journey and the awareness it brings. Brightest of blessings, Krissy

      1. Cherry Blackmore

I have an Auralite 23 slice. It has Amethyst’ calm spiritual energy, plus Citrine’s Solar brilliance and the protective aspects of both, plus enormous all-round healing potential. It’s powerful stuff, like any Quartz; but like any Quartz, it’s gentle enough that it won’t send you sideways.

        Love and Light.

  14. Cherry Blackmore

I’ve felt, seen and spoken directly to crystals.

When I was ten I was diagnosed with Asthma. Shortly after, I was very strongly drawn to a small Aquamarine crystal which was one of several in the shop I was in, but the only one which glowed with a pure white light, obviously trying to get my attention. I asked to handle it, and got a positive response. When I held it in my left hand, it was like an ocean wave washed over me: my worries about my parents’ endless arguments lifted, and my asthma settled right down.

Soon after, my mother took me to visit a geologist who lived nearby and look at some of his mineral collection. One piece, a Bingham Blue Fluorite cluster, I was allowed to handle. I kept hold of it almost the entire time, and I could feel energy passing back and forth between it and me. When the time came to go home, I felt as if I’d left an important part of myself behind; however the cluster wasn’t mine to take, so I had to leave it. I didn’t think I’d see it again; but six years later, after the gentleman left this life owing to asbestosis, it came back to me, just when I had enough money from my college grant to bring it home.

Then there was my first Heliodor. Besides the above mentioned asthma, I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis (and, as I found out back in January, Ankylosing Spondylitis too); the crystal, a bright yellow one-inch tumblestone with a black marking like a Greek letter Lambda, arrived on a nasty cold day when I was in serious back pain. The first thing it did when I got it out of the packaging was ask, in so many words, to be cleansed; when I did that, it shot three huge bolts of energy like lightning strikes (except, you know, without the propensity for nerve damage or cooking organs) down my spine. They stopped the pain dead, and if I hadn’t grabbed hold of something they would also have sent me to my knees.

Then my lovely Rainbow Tourmaline. What a privilege it was to find one of these incredible, incredibly rare crystals which called to me very distinctly, even through a digital photo on Amazon, and was actually affordable! I was, quite naturally, excited – I love Tourmaline in all its forms – but nothing could have prepared me for a crystal that loves rainbows and fair-weather sunsets as much as I do, not to mention has a tremendous knack for aligning and boosting the chakras! Tourmaline has a certain sympathetic power with regard to the nervous system; with Rainbow Tourmaline, the entire CNS gets gently and lovingly healed and stimulated.

Dravite, too, is invaluable. Mine is a double-terminated natural crystal, and when I hold it, it’s as if Mother Earth Herself is saying to me, “Don’t be afraid. I’ve got your back.”

My Black Tourmaline pendant – well, actually, amulet; it’s a simple tetrahedron, but it feels like a magic amulet from a fantasy novel – arrived from India on the morning of the day I had an appointment with a deeply annoying rheumatologist. This character was what my late grandmother would have called a “negative nelly”; he nixed all my treatment suggestions (and this despite the fact that nothing he tried was the least bit helpful) and disrespected my crystals; it was, “No, no, no” to everything he didn’t think of, even if there was clinical evidence it could help. It was cold, despite being May, so I dressed in a merino wool polo neck, black trousers and silvee-and-white trainers, put my princess-cut Sky-Blue Topaz on under the jumper and left the newly cleansed and bonded Black Tourmaline on show. The rheumatologist sat there looking very uncomfortably at my new baby for a good two minutes before telling me I looked like a witch; I said thank you and just smiled at him. Next appointment I wasn’t dressed that differently, but he made a pass. I’d recorded that conversation, so I went and played it back to Patient Liaison, and I insisted on a change of specialist!

My Sky-Blue Topaz was a gift from the Universe during the absolute worst time of my life. My husband had sepsis, and came close to dying: I’d just seen him carted off to hospital and was wondering if I’d see him alive again when something silver caught the afternoon sun and started burning my right retina out. I should mention, it was late June, around the Solstice, so the sun’s rays were very strong. At first I left it alone, but something – not another crystal; I hadn’t wanted to subject my friends to my turbulent emotions, so I left them at home – nagged me to check it out. And there it was, lying on the pavement: a 6mm × 6mm princess-cut, bezel-set Sky-Blue Topaz. No pockets in my outfit, and I’m not given to carrying a handbag, so I held tight to it while I ran a few errands then rushed home to cleanse etc. It took hubby the rest of the year to recover, and during that time, that gemstone was the main reason I didn’t lose my mind.

Crystals come into your life when they know they’re needed. No-one will ever convince me otherwise.
