Agates ~ The Gentle Warriors of the Mineral Kingdom

Agates are found in abundance on Earth, with various different types only being found in certain parts of the world, whilst the more common, grey Agate can be found in the land mass of every continent. They are formed primarily of Chalcedony and Quartz, with various blends of chemicals or base rock that produce over 20 different types of Agate in a large variety of colours & forms. The classification of an Agate, however, is that it is a form of Chalcedony.

On an energetic level, Agates grow within volcanic or metaphorphic rock, imbuing them with the energy of fire and transformation. However, it takes 1000s of years for Agates to form. They do so in pockets within the rock. Slowly, over a long period of time, they usually develop a pattern of stripes as a layer of water washes into the pocket cavity with it’s particular blend of minerals/chemicals/colour. This dries up over time until there is another layer of water that washes in (this happens underground every time it rains heavily for awhile). If the pocket isn’t very big or there are cracks, this is when we see the tree like formations of Tree or Moss Agate rather than the more commonly found stripes.

This tempering with water leaves Agates with hidden aspects in my experience. They are extremely gentle and supportive to our emotions on one level, yet underneath, they have the fire to be a bridge or link that can amplify the energy of other crystals within their vicinity ~ or any form of light/healing energy. This makes them fantastic energy to include in Crystal Layouts or Grids. They show up in gentleness, with a Warrior strength at their core. Interestingly, many of them are protective energetically and in every day life, are resistant to chemical damage. This makes Agate the perfect stone to carve mortar & pestles that are strong enough & hard enough to grind & mix chemicals together. Many laboratories still use them today.

Throughout history, since approximately 350 BC, Agates have been used in jewellery and ceremonial pieces. It is also one of the most popular minerals to carve by hand and polish as it stands the test of time, whether impacted by acid (think acid rain), fire (Agate statues remain standing in houses that have burned to the ground) or water. There is a lot of history, culture and tradition involving Agate over the centuries, all over the World. At it’s heart, it’s a stabilising mineral that only amplifies positive energy.

Be aware that most of the very bright pink, green, purple, yellow & blue Agates have been dyed. These are usually tumblestones, slices or Geodes from Morocco that are the traditional white/grey colour of plain Agate and are then dyed ~ as Agate will soak up a lot of dye when heated and hold it for a long time as it is slightly porous. Keeping these dyed pieces dry, away from water and out of the sun should hold their colour, although it will fade slowly over time. If they get wet, the dye will leak out and stain anything nearby. Always use an old, dry make up brush, soft cloth or soft toothbrush to clean them depending on whether they are polished or rough. I would use anything dyed as an ornament or decoration rather than a personal crystal to work with as the high heating process they use to dye the mineral can often neutralise it’s energy quite significantly. So work with one of those listed below if you’d like the full experience of the energy.

Agate geodes make lovely ornaments to have in the home, constantly emanating stabilising energy and amplifying any positive energy they come into contact with. Keep Agates away from TVs, routers and anything emitting EMFs as am not sure exactly what happens energetically, but it’s like the energy of the Agate dulls and becomes a bit lifeless. I’ve found my pieces are far happier well away from strong electronic devices. For example, don’t cleanse and charge a piece of Agate and then pop it into your pocket with your phone as it will simply go flat energetically. I don’t use Agates in mediation unless I’m wanting to connect to Mother Earth. They don’t seem to do much for me on a 5D level, so I personally feel they are here to stabilise, nourish, nurture and gently motivate us in our day to day, human lives. The exception to this is Moss or Tree Agate as both of those most definitely connect beautifully with Mother Earth and I’ve journeyed easily with Moss Agate in particular.

There are just over 20 different types of Agate, the most popular of which I’ve listed below from a metaphysical perspective. The technical data can be found on any good mineralogical website.

Moss Agate

Moss Agate is a dendritic form of Agate, which in layman’s terms, means it has ‘branches’ rather than stripes. It is beautiful mineral with swirls, patterns and differing areas of blue, grey, white and green that seem to move beneath the surface. Many of the pieces have small caverns of druzy chalcedony within them. Moss Agate is full of feminine energy, Earth energy and is really comforting and stabilising during times of chaos or change. Moss Agate was considered a miraculous healing stone by tribal priests and was used as a talisman to make warriors strong. Native Americans used it as a power stone and I feel this mineral is here to be used to connect us not only with the Earth, but with our Ancestors, so we can access our ancient Soul knowledge & not lose our connection to that. Moss Agate stabilises, balances and strengthens our entire system, particularly the emotional and physical. It is said to harmonises Yin & Yang, the positive and negative forces in the Universe. Moss Agate is also known as a stone of abundance, attracting wealth in all forms. It draws in new business, promoting expansion and growth and is also considered a stone of new beginnings. Midwives have used Moss Agate as a birthing stone for centuries and it is excellent to use whilst recovering from illness, trauma, addiction or injury. It strengthens the energies of those who feel unstable or ungrounded, enhancing mental concentration and endurance. Moss Agate cleanses both our personal energy system as well as that of our environment. Click Here for Moss Agate in stock.

Lace Agate

There are several ‘lace’ Agates out there. Blue and Green Crazy Lace being the most sought after. The cost of Blue Lace Agate is rising fast as the mine in South Africa has flooded with boiling water from the volcanic seam below. Until the mine drains or they find another deposit elsewhere in the World, there won’t be any more for awhile. Agate is a stone of strength. It was used by the Ancients on the breastplates of armour to give warriors strength and make them victorious in battle. Agate enhances our creativity and strengthens the intellect, making it a good stone for both students and artists. All agates work well with our physical energy, providing energetic boosts when needed. They are also all protective & grounding in some way. Blue Lace Agate, in particular, soothes, supports and calms nervous or anxious people. It brings confidence to quiet/shy speakers so they have the courage to communicate. Blue Lace Agate is soothing for hot-tempers as it carries the energy of patience & peace. It is also excellent for therapies that utilise sound. Green Crazy Lace clears old emotional energy, brings understanding & acceptance, heightens our intuition, raises our vibrations, brings issues to the surface & enables us to see them from a higher perspective. It draws a fresh, bright, crisp, clean, new emotional energy into our lives. Click Here for Blue Lace Agate in stock and Click Here for Green Crazy Lace Agate/Chalcedony in stock.

Holley Blue Agate

Holley Blue Agate is a wonderful mediation aid as it works beautifully with the Third Eye. It brings a peaceful, calm ‘holding’ sort of energy that makes us forget about our fears and remember that we are never alone. We are always connected to every living thing on Earth. It is a wonderful stone for Visionaries, those who like to journey and for those who dream a lot. It soothes the emotions whilst bringing clarity and peaceful acceptance into both the mind and heart. If you’re struggling with irrational fears or feeling helplessness as you have no control over a situation, Holley Blue Agate is the perfect mineral to work with. On a physical level, it is said to help with issues with our throat, neck and head. As it works beautifully to ease down any nervous energy and support us in feeling ‘safer’ wherever we are, it can help to ease headaches related to high blood pressure and stress.

Tree Agate

Tree Agate is another Dendritic Agate. It is said to align our chakras and pull us back into ourselves if we’ve been a little bit lost or detached/stressed. On a physical level is is said to be good for blood vessels, nerves and skeletal/bone disorders. Team it with Howlite if having trouble with your teeth or bones. Tree Agate brings stability and keeps one connected to their roots whilst growing in a way that is authentic to them ~ and not steeped in the expectations of others. It’s a good mineral to use when working on the inner self as it supports truth, growth, acceptance and balance. It is one of the recommended crystals for farmers and gardeners due to it’s strong link to the natural cycles of the Earth and seasons. Click Here for Tree Agate in stock.

Turitella Agate

Turritella Agate is an ancestral stone, deeply rooted in the history of humanity and the Earth as it has evolved over time. It is excellent to use when working with past lives or diving deeper into your spiritual gifts. If you’re working on healing anything ancestral within the family, Turritella Agate provides strength and protection. It has survived millions of years and imbues our physical body with strength and our mind with determination. It’s a good one to use when you need to remain focused and on track. As with all Agates, Turritella is strongly connected to Mother Earth, but her old energies, her ancient ways and her progression over time. Going deep with this mineral can show us the truth of the World and our history, rather than the stories we have been told. So it’s a great ‘rabbit hole’ friend to have if you’re that way inclined.

Fire Agate

Fire Agate is said to support the Base, Sacral and Solar Plexus chakras. It heightens physical energy and is excellent when addressing matters of impotence, sexuality or intimacy in relationships. It is also a stabilising stone for timid or shy people as it has a warm, protective quality. A stone of integrity, encouraging high standards and belief in oneself ~ it supports our trust in ourselves and in the bigger picture. Fire Agate also draws creative energy into our life, bringing in new ideas, inspiration and the desire to get lost in whatever you’re creating ~ which doesn’t always mean something artistic. A good meal, a pretty garden, a baby, business or project are also forms of creativity. However we choose to express our unique selves, Fire Agate supports us fully in delighting in that creativity and ensuring it comes from our passionate heart. Fire Agate also stimulates our sexuality in a positive, healthy way, so is a great mineral to use if having difficulties with physical intimacy. Click Here for Fire Agate in stock.

It alleviates emotional upset, allowing that to simply melt away. Botswana Agate encourages us to explore the unknown & find deeper meaning in life.  It is a very soothing, calming crystal that aids creativity, stability, balance and a calm, strong centre. It is also the recommended stone for those trying to work through and release addictive patterns, particularly smoking. Pink Botswana Agate is SO so blissful, like receiving a crystalline hug. It keeps my emotions grounded and stable and allows me to see when the ego mind or my inner child might be running the show. It brings me back into myself, into my emotions and provides a soothing balance during times of change.
